As part of a long term effort to consolidate the employees on a single campus, the CBER II lab building along with three office buildings were the last pieces on the FDA campus in White Oak, MD and included over 1,000,000 sf of new office and lab space.
The 416,000 sf lab building provides 5 levels of lab spaces including BSL-3 spaces and a large below grade support area for document intake and additional specialty labs.
Although connectivity throughout the labs and the office was a primary concern, a key goal was to provide a finer grain of organization in such a large building complex. The building floor plate was organized into 3 smaller neighborhoods, each providing conference and pantry amenities as well as vertical circulation and infrastructure services.
A centralized stair connects all floors of the building allowing users greater connectivity with sub groups. Several double height spaces also provide large collaboration areas outside of the lab. One end of the "L" shaped floor plan connects to the large atrium that engages the three office buildings constructed at the same time.
