The Modernization efforts for the USDA Southeast Poultry Research Lab include the demolition of 24 separate structures and the construction of 4 new lab buildings containing over 245,000 sf of lab space and support.
The project is being delivered via design build efforts with bridging documents at various levels. The final design reimagined the bridging documents and placed a greater emphasis on the the day to day experience of the building occupants and maximized views and daylight by aggregating window areas around the central courtyard. Balancing both the cost and functional needs of the labs, the exterior expression of the buildings were also reimagined as simplified gable forms with a vernacular and an agrarian character fitting the program's mission and location. Primary exterior material are aluminum windows and window wall, oversized grey bricks and metal panels.
From a research perspective the buildings include BSL 2, BSL3, BSL3E, and BSL 3 Ag research spaces with a a high level of infrastructure and safety requirements. The first building completed for the project included a central plant for the campus.
