As part of a design build proposal for Penn State’s campus, the project expanded one of architect Charles Klauder's historic buildings. The Agricultural Engineering building was in need of modernization with renovation of all of the existing spaces, removal of some earlier additions, and the expansion of new labs and teaching spaces.
Program components for the project included high-bay workshops, fermentation labs, fabrication and machine shops.
The proposed design (not executed) maintained and augmented an existing campus pedestrian pathway, by creating an internal street. The great hallway would showcase fabrication and shop type spaces at the lower levels with offices and teaching spaces above. The proposal maintained the existing historical elevation with its grand staircase, while creating a separate front door for the building, aligned with existing pathways and meeting accessibility needs.
